Chicken with Lemon and Safron

After the stress of moving into our new home had subsided, we easily fell in to our routine of watching BBC’s Saturday Kitchen for culinary relaxation and inspiration. Last episode of this season featured Italian Gennaro Contaldo (won’t he ever grow tired of hearing he brought Jamie Oliver to fame I wonder..) making a chicken dish with the very appealing combination of lemon and saffron (safferano!). Having been to the Amalfi coast in the south of Italy we know there is only one kind of lemon he will use, yes you guest it right, the Amalfi ones (“Limone Costa d’Amalfi”).
If you think a lemon is a lemon, you’ve never tasted these fragrant citrus wonders. I probably said this before but where most lemons are just plain sour, the Amalfi lemons are really lemony. Unlucky for us that our usual supplier didn’t have them that day. We decided to make Gennaro’s recipe anyway with other lemons and the excellent saffron we got from a very nice man who has his roots in Persia (Iran). To make a long story short, it was delicious anyway, although our chicken was a little bit overcooked. So this lemon saffron combination, please try it, it’s a perfect marriage.
You can find Gennaro’s recipe here
PS: If you haven’t been to the Amalfi Coast and you are an Italy fan, please go there. It’s the most romantic place!
Tip: try to avoid the ‘tourist’ season.
