Gelato al Caffè

As a teenager I disliked coffee a lot, especially the kind my parents drank (and with them almost everybody else in Holland). But I remember the first time I tasted this wonderful dessert called gelato al caffè in an Italian pizzeria. Now this I liked! From that moment on I always preferred coffee flavored ice cream above all others. And thanks to some knowledge about the art of espresso making and roasting good quality single estate coffee beans, we now enjoy the most perfect ice cream and coffee ever!

So if you want gelato al caffè, simply pour some freshly brewed (not to hot) espresso over the best vanilla ice cream you can find. (In Holland the Hertog brand ‘roomijs’ or ‘slagroomijs’ is an easy to find option, or buy some at your Italian ice cream salon ).

Or take it one step further and also pour over some home made chocolate sauce to die for! This recipe is for two but you can easily make more or eat it on your own when nobody is watching…

Shiny Chocolate Sauce
approx 2 tbsps of water
25 grams of sugar
50 grams of good dark chocolate
10 grams of butter

Dissolve the sugar in the water in a saucepan while heating it ‘au bain marie’. Stir in the chocolate, let dissolve and then do the same with the butter and keep stirring until you get a smooth and shiny sauce. Do not allow to boil!
